Feeling tired? Health experts say taking 6p daily tablet can give you more energy

Feeling tired is something thats usually not too worrying, but if it becomes a regular feeling, there’s a supplement you can take for an extra energy boost – and it will cost just 6p

If you’re constantly finding yourself yawning and dreaming of getting into bed throughout the day – there is a cheap daily tablet that may help perk you up.

Feeling sluggish and fatigued can be for several reasons, which are generally nothing to be too concerned about, but if it becomes a feeling you experience often it may be down to lacking in iron.

While it’s always recommended to consult your GP or healthcare worker, taking iron supplements may also help. Especially if you are anaemic – which means your blood produces a “lower-than-normal” amount of healthy red blood cells.

When you’re not producing enough red blood cells, it means your body isn’t getting enough oxygen-rich blood, according to Wales Online. A lack of oxygen is what makes you feel tired and weak – and even those who aren’t anaemic may notice a difference by incorporating iron into their daily lifestyle.

Studies show iron supports normal oxygen transport around the body and normal function of the immune system. While Vitamin C supports non-haem iron absorption and immune system function, it’s important we keep our bodies healthy with the right vitamins and minerals.

According to the NHS, having low iron means your blood “cannot carry enough oxygen around your body. This makes you feel tired.” They also suggested that by taking ferrous fumarate – a tablet that can help treat iron deficiency anaemia can give you more energy by boosting your iron levels.

It’s important to note that if you feel tired but have not been diagnosed with iron deficiency anaemia, it’s important to talk to a doctor or pharmacist before taking ferrous fumarate. This is because there may be other reasons why you lack energy, and a simple blood test will confirm whether you have anaemia, and your doctor will be able to discuss the results and any treatment with you.

However if taking supplements isn’t the right choice for you, you can incorporate iron rich foods into your diet to help increase your intake.

Foods rich in iron

  • liver (but avoid this during pregnancy)
  • red meat
  • beans, such as red kidney beans, edamame beans and chickpeas
  • nuts
  • dried fruit – such as dried apricots
  • fortified breakfast cereals
  • soybean flour

How much iron do we need?

The amount of iron you need is:

  • 8.7mg a day for men aged 19 and over
  • 14.8mg a day for women aged 19 to 49
  • 8.7mg a day for women aged 50 and over

Holland and Barrett are selling a bottle of 180 iron tablets for £10.99 – which equates to 6p per pill. Or there’s a bottle of 90 tablets for £6.99 (8p per pill) and 30 tablets for £2.99 (10p per pill). These tablets are also made with vitamin C, which also helps reduce tiredness and fatigue and Holland and Barrett say the tablets are formulated to support the normal formation of red blood cells, haemoglobin, and immune system function.
